Among the forests of the Zhongnan Mountains, dry pine needles and twigs are gathered for fire. Mountain spring water simmers in an iron pot, and fresh corn still wrapped in green husks is dropped inside.
The pine‑wood fire crackles softly, releasing a faint pine fragrance that drifts through the air. The crisp spring water soaks into the corn kernels. Once the corn turns plump and translucent, peel back its layered green husks. Golden kernels taste soft, glutinous and sweet, subtly infused with the scent of mountain plants and trees. We found a dead tree on the ridge of Zhongnan Mountain, laden with wild wood‑ear mushrooms. We picked some, just enough for one cold dish, and enjoyed it in the evening with friends visiting Zhongnan Mountain.
Walking below the cliffs of Wendao Valley, Zhongnan Mountain, I came across a dead piece of timber on the ground. It sank instantly in water with a wonderful shape, so I collected it. During sanding work, I found it had fallen from the cliff after a lightning strike. Strong herbal‑medicine scent blended with mint filled the room. It proved to be centuries‑old cliff cypress, instantly water‑submersible and belonging to top‑grade aromatic timber.
